Nuchal Translucency Scan

The information from this scan will give you a risk assessment for Down’s syndrome when it is combined with your blood results. We also assess your baby’s anatomy for this gestation and the placenta.

Why they are done
The scan involves a full assessment of the anatomy at this gestation, an assessment of the uterus, placenta and ovaries and the nuchal translucency measurement.

The nuchal translucency is a thin layer of fluid at the back of the baby’s neck. When we measure this, the baby must be in a position that meets the strict criteria for measurement.

When they are done
These scans can only be performed between 12 weeks and 13 weeks 6 days.

How long it takes
20 min

Price
$75.00
A live recording of the scan is available on a USB stick for an additional $30.00

How to prepare
Please empty your bladder before the scan. You must bring your referral with you. We cannot scan you without the referral from your doctor or midwife.

What to expect
The sonographer will discuss the results with you. The scan results will be with your referrer within 1 day. If urgent the sonographer will phone your referrer.

The results of the scan will also be sent to the laboratory. They will combine the results from the scan with the results from your blood test. The laboratory will send your referrer a risk assessment in the form of a likelihood ratio on the chances that your baby may have a chromosomal abnormality like Down’s syndrome, these should be available in 3 working days.

This is not a yes or no answer. If you wish to know with certainty, then further invasive tests are required. Your referrer can discuss these with you.
